The Summer Game Fest 2023 extravaganza is officially over. Looking back at the event in hindsight, it was more successful than most at capturing some of the hype from the long lost days of E3 (rest in peace). But what were the top takeaways of SGF 2023?

On the first episode of Low Poly, Social Lead Christian Buckley (that’s me!) sits down to talk about what wowed at SGF this year, what industry trends have shown up this summer, and who the biggest winners out of all this year’s shows were.

Ubisoft had a strong showing, throwing their hat in the ring of making Star Wars games, much like this year's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, in addition to returning to their Assassin’s Creed, and Prince of Persia franchises.

PlayStation’s underwhelming showcase positioned Xbox to steal this year’s hype but it wasn’t going to be easy after the troubled launch, release, and conversation around Redfall. Thanks to some exclusive reveals and a chunky demo of Starfield however, Xbox managed to deliver on their prospects and steal some of PlayStation’s thunder.

The Keighley orchestrated Summer Game Fest Kickoff also had a lot to live up to since a previous iteration of the show snagged the reveal for Elden Ring gameplay. After a weak 2022 show, his 2023 showcase ended with a bang thanks to Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

One throughline in several of the big shows? Many of them highlighted a long awaited (in Xbox’s case several) Role Playing Game from celebrated Japanese studios.

PlayStation hypes up Final Fantasy XVI ahead of release, Keighley gets Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, and Xbox showed the next Like a Dragon game, the remake of Persona 3 in Persona 3 Reload, and the next game from the team behind Persona 5.

At the end of the day though, there can only be a handful of winners and highlights out of these events, so let us know what you thought of Summer Game Fest 2023, and what you think of my picks for the highlights of the show!
