Microsoft to change the name of SkyDrive to settle lawsuit

Microsoft has agreed to change their name of their SkyDrive cloud storage today to help settle their lawsuit with the British mega media group Sky Broadcasting.

In a statement released today by Sky, they have agreed to let Microsoft continue to use the ‘SkyDrive’ name during a ‘transition period’ while Microsoft scrambles to figure out what to call themselves. With the financial details still sealed, I’m sure that Sky Broadcasting is having a nice payday about this.

This seems to be a norm for Microsoft and its Windows brand. Last year, Microsoft ran into this same speed bump with The Metro Group over what they called the new Windows 8 Interface. They have since just called it the ‘Modern UI Style’

While this looks silly for Microsoft, it seems a little far fetching for Sky Broadcasting. Basically Sky Broadcasting has the ability to claim trademark infringement on anything that has Sky as the beginning of the name.

Anyone want to start the The Group with me?

Microsoft hasn’t commented yet on their plans to change the name. Microsoft Cloud, anyone?
