Baldur's Gate 3 Shadowheart Romance

Today Larian Studios celebrated a very successful launch weekend for Baldur's Gate 3 with a series of rather crazy (and funny) statistics.

According to a post on the official Twitter account, we learn that only 368 players managed to finish the game in the opening weekend, which shouldn't surprise considering how big the game is.

Do keep in mind that there are mild spoilers ahead.

93% of players opted to be creative and rolled a custom character, spending a combined 88 years in character creation. Nearly 10% of players took at least an hour in character creation, and I'm certainly one of them.

Gale was the most popular origin character, with 27,784 instances in which he's been picked. Karlach follows with 22,514, Astarion with 22,286, Shadowheart with 15,966, Wyll with 14,862, and Lazael with 11,765.

Gale was also the 7th cause of death among players, perhaps unsurprisingly, since 12% of player deaths were caused by friendly fire. We really should be more careful with these fireballs.

The ranking for class choice is as follows:

  1. Paladin
  2. Sorcerer
  3. Warlock
  4. Rogue
  5. Bard
  6. Barbarian
  7. Fighter
  8. Ranger
  9. Wizard
  10. Monk
  11. Druid
  12. Cleric

The racial choice ranking can be found below:

  1. Half-Elf
  2. Human (almost tied with Half-Elf)
  3. Elf
  4. Dragonborn
  5. Tiefling
  6. Drow
  7. Half-Orc
  8. Dwarf
  9. Gnome
  10. Halfling
  11. Githyanki

Almost 100,000 players have been rejected by Astarion, while the majority has picked Shadowheart as their romance choice, followed by Gale.

815,000 NPCs have been "this is Sparta"-ed into chasms, and that's also the number of peak concurrent players the game had on Sunday.

223,539 (61%) players decided to be good and defended the Grove, while 119,753 (34.9%) assaulted it. Do keep in mind that the numbers may feel low simply because it takes quite a long time to get to this point to the story, and most didn't get this far in the weekend.

The adorable dog Scratch has been petted over 750,000 times and I'm guilty of several of these.

Players spoke with 1,400,000 corpses and 2,400,000 animals.

Cumulatively, we played over 10 million hours, which translates into 1,225 years. Certainly not bad for a weekend.

While Baldur's Gate 3 is now available for PC, console players won't be left out forever. Those who plan to play on PS5 will have to wait only a bit longer, until September 7.

Larian has also previously mentioned that the game isn't exclusive to Sony's platform and an Xbox version is in the works. Yet, there are some technical hudles that need to be cleared before it's released.

If you'd like to see more of Baldur's Gate 3, you can take a look at the launch trailer, previous gameplay including a rather... intimate and beastly encounter, a trailer mostly focusing on romance, and another trailer and footage from the PC Gaming Show.
